Built during the second half of the 10th
century, the Mebon temple was built as a rectangular pyramid or temple mountain
and once stood on a small island in the former eastern reservoir or Baray.
This Baray measured 2x7km and its outline can still be seen in satellite
photos. The Baray held 40 million
cubic meters of water and was a source for the Khmer’s advanced irrigation
system. The site was built using
laterite, brick, stucco, and sandstone, all of the durable building materials
