Background on the Workshop

Oaxaca Photography Workshop

So the workshop is over.  I only have a few minutes, so let me just say it was incredible.  I want to thank the instructors, Dave, Raul, and Eniac for all of your help, inspiration, and friendship.  Selma, Cristina, Eva, Mike, and Marie were the assistants for the workshop and they provided needed technical assistance, organized our herd of cats, and I want to thank them for making the whole experience unforgettable.  Also, to all my fellow students, I want to thank you for the camaraderie, assistance, and inspiration.  We also had two guest photographers who offered words of encouragement and provided inspiration through their incredible work, Marcela Taboada and Suki.

Most of these instructors have also formed a company to lead various photographic expeditions in Guatemala, Mexico, and Spain.  I would highly recommend traveling with these wonderful people, especially if you have the photography bug big time.

On this page, I have posted my pictures that made the final class presentation (and in this album so they can be viewed without any of the artifacts of copying onto this page).  The class presentation can be seen here, its an incredible experience put together by Dave Raul, and Eniac from the best pictures the students took during the workshop.  Please take the time to watch it (it will take about 2 minutes to load - for best viewing, you may want to download the file and run it from your computer, so you can enlarge the images).

I have assembled some information on the workshop, where we shot, what we did, and about Oaxaca.

Thank you Raul for setting up this shot for me, outside Santo Domingo church in Oaxaca, Mexico

Thanks to the people above, you should see a marked improvement in my photography on this page.  The instructors followed a documentary/travel style and enforced several rules in the workshop:

Shoot in manual mode only- this meant that we had to master the technical details to ensure the proper exposure
Use only one camera and only one lens (a wide angle), no other equipment - this simplified the process and helped ensure that we got close to our subjects, and did not scare them off with a bunch of equipment.
No retouching in a photo editor - this ensured that we focused on composition, as well as the technical aspects, or at least live with what had done.

Thanks to the regime of this workshop, none of the photos on this site show were altered in Photoshop, save one where I cropped and changed the color levels to save an image of a person I met- the first person who can tell me which picture will get a nice bottle of wine from my "cellar".

Taken at Mitla, with the church in the background, this is some type of "tree" growing out of some type of succulent plant.

Slide Shows

Below are several slide shows with my photographs from my time in Oaxaca.  They are posted on YouTube, though the quality of YouTube videos is somewhat lacking.  I have also included on this page links downloadable versions so you can see better quality images (they should take 1-1.5 minutes to load).  Apologies to the Apple users if they cannot view these files.

On Assignment

First off, is a slideshow with my best photographs from the workshop.  The pictures here are basically in chronological order.

The Shooters and Shooting

Second, a slide show with pictures I took focusing on my fellow photographers and what it was like to shoot during the workshop.  I would not say these pictures are my best, they are not.  They were mostly taken when I stepped back from a subject at hand and shot the odd frame of what was happening at the time.  But they will hopefully show what it was like during the workshop's shooting sessions.  My only regret is that these are not my best pictures.  The people in these photos helped to make this workshop the terrific experience that it was.

Shadow Lands

Here is a link to a student video, posted on you tube, that several students and I put together.  It will mean the most to those people who were there at Monte Alban that day.  We hoped you enjoyed it.  Thanks to Laura, Sean, and Eva who brought a lot of laughs during the five minutes we shot this and the fun we had conspiring to put together the show.  If you write me at michaeljpalma@yahoo.com, I can send a copy of the file.

After the Workshop

This slide show contains pictures I took following the workshop, practicing what I learned on the Zocalo and in front of the cathedral on Friday and Saturday nights.  Included are shots of a fold dance exhibition, a troop of clowns, the Oaxaca state governor's caravan, and a wedding party coming out of the cathedral.

This was taken at Monte Alban, the lines and texture struck me as  particularly interesting on that hot afternoon.
